We have seen our first eliminations for the 2021 Darts Premier League as reigning champion Glen Durrant and Rob Cross finished in the bottom two league places before we had even reached Thursday night’s Judgment Night.

Players will now down darts until May the 5th when play resumes, again at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes. A final two batches of games will take place before we reach the playoff stage by May the 28th.

Play finished last Thursday with new League leader Nathan Aspinall thrashing Gary Anderson 7-2 as he stretched his unbeaten run to six games. The Asp averaged 102.45 as he put a below par Flying Scotsman to bed.

Aspinall just pipped debutant Dimitri Van den Bergh to top spot after the Belgian had squandered a three set lead over James Wade, a last minute replacement for the sick Gerwyn Price, to draw 6-6. 

Wade now sits in fourth place one behind Michael van Gerwen who lost out to Jonny Clayton. Gary Anderson now props up the table, while Jose de Sousa and Peter Wright make up the numbers in sixth and seventh, respectively. 

Despite being third, Michael van Gerwen is the 15/8 favourite ahead of the Dream Maker Dimitri van den Bergh. In the absence of Gerwyn Price — after the world number one withdrew on the opening day following the return of a positive virus test — the tourney is surely MVG’s to lose. To be fair, this year’s condensed schedule always favoured the Dutchman, who is still the short-priced favourite to win the Premier League for the sixth time. 

But it’s underrated Nathan Aspinall who deservedly leads the way at this sort of halfway stage. We always thought 20/1 – The Asp’s price a month at the start of April – was generous and his odds have now been cut to 11/2, which is still pretty decent given he hasn’t lost a game in six games. 

For a while, The Ferret Jonny Clayton looked like a Premier League natural but that has eased off slightly of late. That was before he put away Mighty Mike. The Welshman remains in the hunt and could make the playoffs after which anything can happen.

It’s a big week in darts world as the 2021 renewal of the PDC Premier League Premier of Darts finally gets underway. What’s more, we’re fast-tracking the first nine-game nights, which are normally spread over nine weeks touring the UK and various overseas stops, and instead playing them out in two-week-long batches.

Unfortunately, there will still be no crowds present but, with over half the adult population of the UK having already received their first vaccinations and the nation slowly creaking out of the latest lockdown, there is hope that, come the playoffs at least, maybe we can get some crowds into venues.

For now, though, Sky Sports is the place to watch this year’s event which had been due to begin at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena on February 4 but will now be played in its entirety at the now extremely familiar Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes.

Nothing has been announced regarding the dates and venue(s) of the second phase of the competition, but at least it’s a start.

What darts fans can expect for the Darts Premier League

As ever, the first stage of the competition will pit each of the 10 darters involved against each other across nine fixtures. Games remain the best of 12 legs and wins are worth two points with draws rewarding just one. 

By the end of those first nine nights, the bottom two players in the standings will be eliminated just as they would have been under normal conditions. 

Last year’s winner Glen Durrant is joined by world champion Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright, Rob Cross, Nathan Aspinall, Gary Anderson and Michael van Gerwen who all return from last year’s competition which leaves us with three new comers. These Premier League debutants are Jose de Sousa, Dimitri Van Den Bergh and Jonny Clayton.

Normally, when a player gives a bad performance they have a week to fix things but, with such a fast and furious schedule, this isn’t the case this year and players need to be in form five nights in a row. 

Of course, by the end of the second batch of games, which doesn’t begin until April the 19th, everyone will have played each other, but these first five nights could really prove crucial.

Perhaps this is why Michael van Gerwen, now no longer the world number one, is still a favourite at bet365 with a price of 9/4.

Mighty Mike gets his tournament underway in the last game of the night on Monday against Dimitri van den Bergh.  Should a player get off to good start, then momentum will be everything and I think MVG will see off DVDB with comparative ease.

The following night he takes on Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright before coming up against Rob Cross on Wednesday, by which point he could have sailed clear.

The big hitter lands on Thursday when he takes on Gerwyn Price, a 12/5 shot for the outright tourney win, and the world number one.

The Iceman, however, has a tougher opener taking on Gary Anderson on Monday in a repeat of the PDC World Championship final back in January. Playing Rob Cross in a game he will surely win on the Tuesday, Price then walks into a tough match against outside hopeful and 2020 runner-up, Nathan Aspinall.

The Asp is a fairly generous 20/1 to win the Darts Premier League, with only reigning champion Glen Durrant (20/1) and early elimination favourite Rob Cross (40/1 to win) deemed to be a less likely tournament winner.

To me, that seems harsh and an each way in the Asp might prove to be worthwhile.

Elsewhere, Peter Wright can be picked up for 5/1, but I wouldn’t be touching that. 

bet365 have stamped odds of 11/1 each on Jonny Clayton, Dimitri van den Bergh and Gary Anderson. Jose De Sousa is available for 16/1, but it really should come to the world’s best two and who has the kinder fixture list in week one. I think that’s MVG, and I think he could be clear at the top by Friday night.

If so, his odds on overall success in the 2021 Darts Premier League will only reduce sharply so it might be prudent to get on the Dutchman now.

The moment that second attempt at double 18 was pinned, history had been made.

That double meant that 25-year-old Fallon Sherrock from Milton Keynes had beaten Ted Evetts to become the first woman ever to win a match at the PDC World Darts Championship, in what was only their fourth year of participation.

She wasn’t done there. In her next match, against world number 11 Mensur Suljović, a tournament seed, she pinned the bullseye to claim an even more impressive win.

Sherrock, one of two females in the 96 strong field, made international news and, it was hoped, opened the gate for many more women darters to compete on equal terms with the men in the future.

Her breakthrough moment and follow-up victory will also have helped the men’s game as more and more people sat up and took notice of the game, way beyond UK borders.

Darts was already growing in popularity but when Sherrock made international news, journalists came from all around the world to talk about her achievements at the Alexandra Palace that December.

She even got a Tweet from Tennis icon Billie Jean King and an Instagram post from Sarah Jessica-Parker.

This is not the sort of coverage darters are used to. As for Sherrock herself, only a matter of weeks prior to her life-changing moment, she had been a single mum with a mobile hairdressing side hustle while competing in the now-defunct BDO.

Now, her efforts on the PDC Circuit had seen her rewarded with guest status for that year’s Darts Premier League Nottingham stopover where she took on, and tied with, the eventual winner Glen Durrant, who admitted that it was the toughest game he has ever had to play in.

She was also set to take part in the World Series in the USA and Australia.

Sherrock momentum halts due to 2020 happenings

But 2020 was cruel. For global sports in general but it also meant that her impact, which had been truly groundbreaking at the time, had now been dimmed and women’s darts’ momentum stunted.

It had been hoped that her and Lisa Ashton’s PDC Tour progress would lead to change and that women could be seen to be able to compete on level terms with men on a much more regular basis.

Instead, at high risk due to her well documented battles with kidney disease, she found herself at more risk than most, forcing her to stay home and play online darts against Phil Taylor and even former Bayern Munich and Italy footballer Luca Toni.

As it turned out, that Darts Premier League appearance, for which she could not earn points, was really the last we saw of her on TV.

There were two women participants at last year’s renewal of the World Championships, both of whom were eliminated in the first round, but there was no female presence at the UK Open, Matchplay or any other ranking PDC event.

A PDC Women’s tour?

For there to be progression in the women’s game, surely the next logical step would be a PDC women’s tour with a few crossover events.

With Lisa Ashton, Mikuru Suzuki, Deta Hedman, Lorraine Winstanley, Anastasia Dobromyslova and Beau Greaves all raising awareness for the women’s game, it seems like the next move.

In August 2020, the PDC announced plans to move the women’s game on and introduce a Women’s Series mini-tour for which Ally Pally qualification would be up for grabs.

While Sherrock supports more televised female events and a fully-fledged Women’s Tour, it must be careful not to tread on the toes of any move towards genderless darts and the efforts for women to be viewed as darts players rather than female darts players.

Perhaps the answer is to help develop female talent in the short term through all-female events in the main, while introducing some women participants in televised majors for long term inclusion.

That at least would be a fitting legacy for the Queen Of The Palace’s World Championship achievements rather than merely making a decent pub quiz question ten years from now.
