The Bully Boy saw off local hero Nathan Aspinall in the first round before moving on to reigning champion Michael van Gerwen and Clayton to complete back-to-back Premier League night wins and seal a top-four finish in the process.

After overcoming Aspinall 6-3 in their quarter final, he then landed six doubles from 11 attempts in a remarkable display to defeat Mighty Mike 6-4 in what was a repeat of January’s World Championship final.

Stunning Performance In The Final

The world number one then saved his best display of the night for the final where he narrowly missed double 12 for a nine-dart finish as well as landing five 180s in a stellar performance.

Welsh star Clayton took the lead early in the final after taking out 72 and 121 to establish a 2-1 scoreline, but then Smith really turned on the style in a mesmerising run that saw him reel off four legs on the spin to take command.

First, he missed double 12 to complete the nine-darter to take the fourth leg in just ten darts, before landing six perfect darts in the following leg for a 12-darter that moved him ahead.

The Bully Boy also took the next two legs on double ten to build a commanding 5-2 lead and, although The Ferret punished a missed match dart to strike back in the eighth leg, the St Helens man banked his second successive night win in the next leg on the double 13.

Smith finished the night with a season’s best average of 110.05 which had peaked at 121.47 at one point and helped to secure the five league points that crucially secured his play off place in London on May 25.

The Race To London

With three players having booked their place at O2 Arena, there is just the one play off spot left to fill, and only two players left to fill it, the favourite for which would be Jonny Clayton.

The Ferret’s run to the final lifted him back into the top four in the table, following wins against Peter Wright and Chris Dobey respectively. The only other play off contender is Nathan Aspinall who was shot down in the first round by The Bully Boy.

Elsewhere, Mighty Michael van Gerwen put an end to a run of five successive defeats against Gerwyn Price with an excellent 6-2 win in a high-quality quarter-final where both players averaged over 103 and the Dutchman landing six out of 10 of his doubles.

Quarter-final defeats for both Peter Wright and Dimitri van den Bergh saw their feint hopes of play off qualification officially extinguished after both of them relinquished a 2-0 lead before losing to Clayton and Chris Dobey respectively.

Despite nailing a second 170 checkout of the Premier League season Dobey is also now out of the running and will not reach the play offs in his debut season and now sits 10 points adrift of the top four with only two league nights remaining and Clayton and Aspinall meeting in what is likely to be a winner takes all match on Night 16 in Aberdeen.

The Premier League roadshow now rolls into Sheffield’s Utilita Arena on Thursday, May 11 for Night 15 of the league phase. Michael van Gerwen takes on Michael Smith in another repeat of the World Championship final, while Gerwyn Price takes on Nathan Aspinall, Jonny Clayton and Chris Dobey and Peter Wright meet up in a match where both will be playing for pride. And money.

Gerwyn Price v Nathan Aspinall

With only two nights of the League phase remaining, Gerwyn Price is guaranteed to finish top of the Premier League table so long as he wins the night and Michael van Gerwen doesn’t make the final. The Iceman has booked his place at the O2 Arena which isn’t something that can be said for Nathan Aspinall. The Asp is, however, one of only two players still in with a chance of a play off spot.

A second-place finish in Sheffield would also be enough for Gezzy if Mighty Mike loses his quarter-final and Michael Smith fails to win the night, but in order to stand a chance of doing that Price will need to be up for yet another tussle with the Asp.

Four times the pair have met in the Premier League this season with each of them taking two wins. They also boast a legs aggregate score of 20-18 in Price’s favour and we can expect another close encounter even with the gulf in average stats.

The Iceman suffered a rare off day last time out in Manchester, exiting pointless after a 6-2 defeat to The Green Machine in last week’s quarter-finals but he has now served up 21 ton+ averages in his last 25 matches in all competitions.

Incredibly, he has only fallen below 100 three times in his last 16 matches and two of those were in the high 80s. Price still actually managed to win one of those which just so happened to be in a semi-final against Aspinall two weeks ago.

In contrast, The Asp has only exceeded 100 in two of his last twenty matches across all competitions and dropped in to the 80s four times. But stats count for very little in short format games such as in the Premier League of Darts, even more so when we’re talking about someone with the battling qualities of Nathan Aspinall who, arguably, has the bigger need for the points.

Chris Dobey v Peter Wright

The second match of the night is, technically, a dead rubber as neither player can make the play offs. However, there is still prize money and pride on the line. Former Darts Premier League champion Peter Wright will also be looking to avoid the embarrassment of becoming the first darter to take part in the new League format and go a full season without winning a single night.

Each of the eight players managed to win at least one night last season, but only Snakebite and Dimitri van den Bergh have failed to do so this year. The Scotsman has only managed to reach one final this year where he lost in Birmingham 6-5 to Jonny Clayton.

He really hasn’t had too much to shout about this entire calendar year and, dating all the way back to February, he has only managed two-ton-plus averages in 34 matches. Eleven of those came in under 90 too, one of which was in last week’s first-round defeat to Jonny Clayton.

Going into this match, Chris Dobey has three more points and two more match wins, however, the week one champion, who also reached a final in Nottingham back in March, has been by far the better player statistically than Wright so far this season.

Hollywood won their only other meeting this year which came on opening night and I feel he is good value to repeat the feat and make sure he doesn’t pick up the wooden spoon in his debut season.

Michael van Gerwen v Michael Smith

Michael Smith kept his slim chances of topping the Darts Premier League table alive with a vital victory over Michael van Gerwen in Manchester last week on his way to winning a second night in a row. This week the World Championship finalists meet up once again with both players hoping to keep within touching distance of league-leading Gerwyn Price.

We have reached the point of the league season where the maths come into play and if Price wins his match against Nathan Aspinall earlier in the night, then The Bully Boy needs to beat second-placed van Gerwen otherwise he will have to settle for a simple play off place. MVG however can take a hit and still top the table so long as The Iceman doesn’t make the final.

Again, there isn’t a great deal resting on this other than finishing positions but either way, it should make for a cracking contest between two players who are coming into red-hot form at just the right time.

The world number one has won all of his last six Premier League matches to put to bed any lingering concerns that he could miss out on the play offs. In last week’s final against Jonny Clayton he averaged a brilliant 110 and only just missed out on a nine darter.

Amazingly, Michael van Gerwen has failed to reach a final since finishing runner-up to Gerwyn Price in week eight. He did, however, get his revenge on the Welshman last week and averaged around 100 in his two matches in Manchester. That put him in the mood for the Belgian Darts Open at the weekend which he won to chalk up his first European Tour title since May 2022.

In three of his five matches he averaged over 100 and didn’t drop below 97 at all so he will be coming into this match with bags of his usual confidence. This is a tough one to call but expect plenty of top darting action and high scores.

Jonny Clayton v Dimitri Van den Bergh

Jonny Clayton goes into Night 15 having clawed his way back into the play off spots thanks to a hard-fought run to his fourth final of the year last week before eventually finishing runner-up to Michael Smith.

All three of The Ferret’s final appearances, which includes two nightly wins, have come in the second half of the season so there can be little doubt that he has found an extra gear over the past couple of months.

The Austrian Darts Open title champion has averaged 100 in all three of his matches during the weekend’s European Tour events despite ultimately coming up just short to Dirk van Duijvenbode in the last eight so he will be confident of punishing Dimitri van den Bergh in the first round in Sheffield.

Similarly to Peter Wright, the Belgian is also looking at the possibility of going through the entire Darts Premier League season without picking up a nightly win and he hasn’t made it to a final since week three.

In his last 22 matches in all competitions, he has only posted two ton-plus averages while Clayton has achieved that 11 times over the same period. That being said, The Ferret’s overall DPL average is slightly under van den Bergh’s.

One particular area where Clayton has impressed in recent weeks is his ton plus finishing. The Welshman had only managed four 100+ checkouts in 15 matches by the end of March, since when he’s fired in 11 in just 46 legs. He’s also gone 120 or higher on nine occasions including five from 121 so could take another step towards play off qualification this week.

2023 Premier League Darts Night Fourteen Betting Tips And Predictions

Pete’s Darts Betting Tips

  • In his match against Peter Wright, back Jonny Clayton to win and land the most 180s at the boosted odds of 13/5, up from 12/5 at bet365.
  • In the night’s second match, bet365 is offering enhanced odds on Chris Dobey winning his match against Dimitri van den Bergh and scoring the game’s highest checkout.
  • Michael Smith to win his match against Nathan Aspinall and pin the most maximums has been boosted from 6/4 to 13/18 at bet365.
  • In the top of the table clash between Gerwyn Price and Michael van Gerwen, expect The Iceman to come out on top and pin the most 180s which has been boosted from 11/5 to 5/2 with bet365.

Michael Smith picked up his second nightly win in this year’s Darts Premier League on Thursday in Leeds and in doing so catapulted himself up into third place in the table to reignite his play off hopes. The Bully Boy did so by beating Chris Dobey, Peter Wright and Gerwyn Price respectively on Night 13.

Smith had fallen out of the play off places for the first time since Night Two after his defeat to The Iceman in the first round in Rotterdam a fortnight ago, but this time enjoyed a fine 6-4 success at the First Direct Arena against the league leader who once again played some mesmerising darts in his run to yet another final.

The World Champion eased effortlessly into his fifth weekly final of the campaign in typical style, dropping only three legs in overcoming Dobey and Wright. In his quarter-final demolition of Dobey Smith averaged 105 and landed five 180s while threatening to throw a nine-darter on numerous occasions before wrapping up a 6-1 win.

The Bully Boy’s next target was Peter Wright who lost 6-2 in the semis. In the match, Smith smashed home another five 180s and booked his place in the final with a spectacular 164 checkout. That set up the showdown everyone wanted to see against table-topping Gerwyn Price, a man who had bettered Smith in their previous two meetings.

Bully Boy Versus The Iceman

Smith though would avoid a third straight defeat against the Welshman and produced a stellar display to win his second night. The world number one broke the Price throw immediately, firing in legs of 13 and 11 darts to race into a 2-0 lead.

Price halved the deficit with a 12 dart hold of throw in the third leg, but Smith re-established his two-leg buffer with successive holds in West Yorkshire.

The Iceman then conjured up an effortless 148 combo on tops to bring things back to 4-3 before Smith rounded off 13 and 14 dart legs to bank a much-needed five points. The results of Night 13 mean that Price has extended his lead at the top of the table with wins over Jonny Clayton and Nathan Aspinall.

The Iceman reached his seventh nightly final of 2023 to move four points clear of Michael van Gerwen in second spot. The 38-year-old was in a punishing mood in his all-Welsh quarter against Clayton, averaging close to 111 to chalk up a 6-2 win, a score line that sees The Ferret drop out of the top four places.

The Iceman continued his charge by exacting his revenge on Nathan Aspinall for last week’s final defeat.

Two Points Each

The other two members of the last four, Peter Wright and Aspinall both leave West Yorkshire with two points each thanks to victories over Michael van Gerwen and Dimitri Van den Bergh respectively. Snakebite produced what was arguably his best performance of the season so far to see off Mighty Mike 6-3 in their last eight clash reeling off three successive legs to bring an end to his four-match losing streak against the Dutchman.

Elsewhere, Night 12 winner Aspinall continued his revival in form against Dimitri van den Bergh for the second week running having lifted his hoo doo against The Dream Maker. The Asp crashed in four maximums and also converted a brace of ton-plus finishes to turn out the 6-4 winner.

Next up it’s Manchester’s AO Arena for Night 14 of the Darts Premier League. League leader Gerwyn Price takes on reigning champion Michael van Gerwen in a battle of the league’s top two, while play off contenders Michael Smith and Nathan Aspinall go head to head in a vital clash.

Jonny Clayton will kick off his bid for a third nightly win of the year against Peter Wright, while Hollywood Chris Dobey and Dimitri van den Bergh will also meet at the oche.

Winner’s Nationality Bet

With the top two all but assured to be present in London it really is a case now of three players – Michael Smith, Nathan Aspinall and Jonny Clayton – competing for the last two play off places. And while you can pick up 50/1 at bet365 on any other nationality winning the tournament outright there are really only three potential winning nationalities. With the potential for two Englishmen, two Welshmen and a Dutchman, these are the only ones worth betting on.

Your bet365 darts betting odds on the 2023 Premier League of Darts outright winner’s nationality are as follows: Welsh 23/20, Dutch 7/4 and English 13/5. With only one Dutchman in the competition, the odds on the other two, depending on who makes it out of Smith, Aspinall and Clayton make better sense I feel.

Peter Wright v Jonny Clayton

There really isn’t much evidence to suggest Peter Wright wins the last three remaining Premier League nights and even if he miraculously does he would still be highly unlikely to make it to the play offs. Snakebite did manage to pick up a shock victory over Michael van Gerwen in last week’s quarter finals with an average of 97 but then proceeded to follow that up with an 80.41 in a 6-2 defeat to Michael Smith.

The Scotsman didn’t fare much better over the weekend’s European Tour event either where the same inconsistencies were on display again, averaging 102.71 in a 6-4 win over The Bully Boy in the last 16 only to then be destroyed 6-1 by eventual champion Dave Chisnall in the quarter-finals.

Incredibly for a two-time world champion, that 102 was Wright’s only second-ton plus average in his last 32 matches so he really needs to find his form if he is to get back to challenging for the major titles again.

A far more reliable performer right now is Jonny Clayton who has eight 100+ averages in his last 15 games in all competitions. That includes a European Tour title, but his Premier League chances look slim having dropped out of the top four last week.

He remains within touching distance of the play off places however and a decent run could propel him back into contention for a place at London’s O2 Arena in a few weeks’ time.

The Ferret is currently fifth in the table and is in this week’s weaker side of the draw and after overcoming Snakebite he will surely be fancying his chances of reaching the final where he could play Gerwyn Price for the sixth time this DPL season.

Chris Dobey v Dimitri Van den Bergh

In a tournament that has a lot of repeat fixtures, incredibly Chris Dobey and Dimitri Van den Bergh have only met each other once in this year’s Darts Premier League and only twice overall in 2023.

With any luck these two will produce the sort of quality that we saw in their previous match in this competition where they both averaged 104 in a 6-3 win for the Belgian.

They both need to win the night title to be in with any chance of getting into the play offs so points and not entertainment will be their main aim. Dobey hasn’t picked up any points whatsoever in any of the last five weeks while van den Bergh has just the victory in the last six weeks.

There were signs of some slight hope for The Dream Maker away from the Premier League after he banked a couple of 105 averages on the European Tour at the weekend.

That being said, one of those came in 6-1 defeat to Ryan Searle. He also pinned eight 180s in the 16 legs he played over both matches so if he is beginning to find his range again he could be a threat.

Michael Smith v Nathan Aspinall

Last week’s winner Michael Smith looks like he has discovered some Premier League of Darts form at just the right time but, as one of the three stars fighting it out for the final two play of places, the pressure is still on ahead of his crunch meeting with Nathan Aspinall, another player still in with a top four chance.

After a little wobble halfway through the campaign, The Bully Boy has made it to three of the last five nightly finals, winning his second-night last week.

This week’s opponent, Aspinall, hasn’t been playing too shabby either after picking up his first nightly win in Rotterdam a fortnight ago. The Asp chalked up another couple of points last week in Leeds as well to hang onto the last remaining play off spot for now at least.

Smith is four points ahead of fifth-placed Jonny Clayton and Aspinall is three ahead meaning that if the Ferret beats Peter Wright earlier in the evening, as is highly likely, then this match is going to be much tenser than maybe it normally would be with everything to play for.

The edge goes to the world champion as he is showing more consistency of late with three-ton plus averages in his last five games in all competitions this past week while The Asp’s best over the same time frame is 98 which isn’t particularly poor, but he has also slumped into the high 80s on two occasions.

The Bully Boy also posted another 14 maximums last Thursday night to bring his 180 per leg ratio up to 0.37, the highest in the competition, so if he finds a similar range again then he can shoot down The Asp.

Gerwyn Price v Michael van Gerwen

It is a sign of how well he is playing right now that Gerwyn Price goes into his game against Michael van Gerwen as the bet365 darts betting odds on favourite. This top-of-the-table clash has all the hallmarks of a classic in the making.

This is their sixth in this season’s Premier League and their ninth in 2023 overall, and it’s a fixture that rarely disappoints, especially now that Price has levelled out against the Dutchman, if not overtaken him.

The Iceman has won three of their previous five in this competition and he is also looking for a successive win over his arch-rival in all competitions having beaten Mighty Mike on more than one occasion in European Tour events over the past two months, including the International Darts Open final at the beginning of last month.

It now seems crazy to think that the Welshman needed 19 attempts to eventually break his duck against MVG, a win that came back in the 2019 Grand Slam of Darts semi-finals and since then he’s won 13 of their 24 matches.

Not only are there only four points separating them at the top of the table with Price on top, but their seasonal average is basically identical. However, when we are talking about recent form and performance levels, Price, who has hit five more 180s than any other player in the tournament, is streets ahead.

The Iceman has now produced 20 100+ averages in his last 24 matches across all competitions which is phenomenal, and he has only dropped below 100 three times in his last 15 matches. Two of those were in the high 80s and he still managed to win one of those games including last week’s semi-final win over Nathan Aspinall.

In contrast, The Green Machine has only managed the one-ton plus average in his last 10 games and was well off his game in Leeds last week when he was shocked by Peter Wright in the first round. All of the signs point to a win for Price even if it is it’s unlikely to be as one-sided as the 6-1 hammering that was dished out by Price earlier in the season. This will probably be more like the other seven meetings so far this season and be a close run thing.

  • Nathan Aspinall to win and produce the highest checkout in his match against Dimitri van den Bergh has been boosted from 13/8 to 7/4 at bet365.

The 2023 Premier League of Darts has a new nightly winner after Nathan Aspinall brought an end to ending Gerwyn Price’s hot streak to win his first Premier League Darts night of the season. The Asp took home the Night 12 final which was held in the Rotterdam Ahoy Arena in the Dutch city.

Price had been a hot favourite to pick up his fifth-night win and was once again posting high averages taking his run of one hundred-plus successive averages in the DPL to seven with impressive wins over Michael Smith, who he beat 6-3, and Jonny Clayton, where he won 6-1, but he ultimately came up short in the final succumbing to a 6-4 defeat.

The result does mean, however, that The Iceman bettered the points haul of Michael van Gerwen and in doing so replaces Mighty Mike at the top of the Premier League table.

In the first round quarter finals Aspinall had already silenced the noisy sell-out 11,000 home crowd where he kept his calm to defeat Michael van Gerwen 6-5 in a deciding leg before overcoming Dimitri van den Bergh 6-4 to reach his second final of this year’s campaign.

Come the final, The Asp struck first with a superb 124 combo before Price replied by taking out a 140 checkout in leg three to seize the momentum. However, Aspinall responded by claiming the next three legs to establish a 4-2 lead, brilliantly reeling off consecutive legs in 13, 13 and 12 darts respectively.

The Iceman soon reduced the arrears with a comfortable hold of throw in the seventh leg but The Asp was undeterred and moved to the brink of the night win after chucking in another 13-dart hold of throw before going on to seal the deal with a 71 check out in the tenth and final leg. In the final, The Iceman’s average dipped to just 88.52 compared to Aspinall’s 97, an area where he had previously been so strong.

Elsewhere, semi-finalists van den Bergh and Jonny Clayton left Rotterdam with two points each, thanks to quarter-final wins against Peter Wright and Chris Dobey respectively. Dimitri van den Bergh put an end to a run of four consecutive quarter final defeats with a 6-3 success over Peter Wright, which saw him leapfrog Dobey and move into sixth spot.

Darts Masters champion Chris Dobey lost 6-4 to a clinical Clayton in the evening’s opener, with the Welshman pinning three ton plus finishes and averaging close to 101 in a top quality display.

The Premier League of Darts now heads to Leeds’ First Direct Arena this Thursday, where league leader Price takes on Clayton in an all-Welsh affair on Night 13. We will also see MVG begin his bid for a fourth nightly win of 2023 against Snakebite, while Aspinall takes on Dimitri van den Bergh, and Michael Smith and Hollywood Chris Dobey lock horns in the evening’s opener.

Michael Smith v Chris Dobey

Michael Smith heads to Leeds sitting outside the top four in the league table and up against an opponent he hasn’t managed to beat this year in three attempts. That opponent is Chris Dobey who has seen his play off chances fade quickly following a run of four successive first-round defeats with his last victory in the Premier League coming against Smith in Newcastle on March 23.

Both players disappointed in their European Tour outings at the weekend while their most recent averages have been similarly decent without being spectacular. All the signs point to a close battle which should mean that we can expect plenty of 180s given how prolific they both are when it comes to landing maximums.

Both players win around 13% of legs with ton-plus checkouts so we could see potentially at least one or two 100+ checkouts as well. The Bully Boy is leading the way for 180s per leg in the Premier League of Darts this season while ten of his 13 ton+ checkouts have been scored at 20 or higher. Expect more of the same as the St Helens chucker look to bully his way back into play off contention.

Michael van Gerwen v Peter Wright

Poor old Peter Wright. Not only is he propping up the table right now following a dismal campaign so far having once again failed to pick up any points last week, but he now runs into Michael van Gerwen so he could very well suffer the exact same fate once more.

Snakebite has already suffered a pair of 6-1 defeats to this week’s opponent and also succumbed to yet another 6-1 mauling at the Austrian Open at the weekend. That spanking was dished out by local hero but fading star Mensur Suljovic who, despite the margin of victory, could only muster a lowly average of just 78.

Things are not looking good for Peter Wright right now and he has to be wary of taking on The Green Machine and I simply can’t see him making the semis this week. Mighty Mike did make the semis in Austria over the weekend, however, and he should be able to beat the Scot comfortably enough this week in Birmingham.

Gerwyn Price v Jonny Clayton

Although great mates, these two must be sick of the sight of each other as they seem to be meeting up on a weekly basis. At the very least, Jonny Clayton must be sick of the sight of his Welsh compatriot Gerwyn Price who has come out on top in all but one of those occasions.

The Iceman moved to the top of the table for the first time this year thanks to his run to a sixth final of the campaign last week, a run that included a 6-1 destruction of The Ferret. In doing so, Price leapfrogged Michael van Gerwen into top spot and at the same time became the first player in the tournament to reach the 30 point mark.

While still not quite a mathematical guarantee, this all but effectively secures a play off place for the first time in his career.

The 2021 World Champion is a winner of four weekly titles so far in this campaign and will be out to cement his position as Premier League leader. He opens up this week’s campaign against his World Cup teammate. Price has not lost a quarter-final fixture in any of his last six outings and has won three out of his four all-Welsh affairs in this year’s Premier League.

The Ferret, who won the Austrian Open European Tour title on Sunday, starts the night in the fourth spot after picking up back-to-back night wins in Weeks Nine and Ten and is looking to finish in the play off places for the third season in a row.

The 2021 DPL champion has Michael Smith leading the pack that is breathing down his neck and he will be well aware that any slip-up in Leeds could see him fall out of the top four with only a few weeks left to play.

Nathan Aspinall v Dimitri Van den Bergh

Nathan Aspinall kicks off his bid to win back-to-back nightly wins with a battle against his former arch-nemesis Van den Bergh. The former UK Open champion had lost ten consecutive matches to van den Bergh prior to beating the Belgian in Newcastle last month.

Having overcome the hoo doo, The Asp then once again beat The Dream Maker when they met in Rotterdam a week ago.

That victory was a step on the way to Aspinall picking up his first weekly title of this year’s competition to strengthen his play off chances as he climbs from fifth to third in the league table.

Dimitri van den Bergh put an end to a run of four straight quarter-final exits in Rotterdam but nevertheless remains eight points adrift of the play off qualification spots and is in desperate need of a weekly title to stand any chance of being in contention.

The bet365 darts betting odds point to this being a close run contest between the two, with The Asp just slightly getting the nod which I think I agree with. Where Aspinall does look to have a slight edge, at least statistically, is when it comes to landing those maximums.

The Asp averages 180 every 3.2 legs in the Darts Premier League, while van den Bergh averages one every 3.7 legs, and those numbers are also being produced on the Pro Tour.
