PDC World Championship Of Darts Betting Tips

We are swiftly approaching the most wonderful time of the year.

A time when we all get together, gather round, drink until merry and watch the celebrations and coronations of the elite few. No, not Christmas or the Queens’s speech, but The PDC Darts World Championships.

On December 15 at the Alexandra Palace, the race for the Sid Waddell Trophy and £1.65m in prize money gets underway to light up the holidays once again. Yes, the 72-player, Ally Pally World Champs are a staple of the festive season as the world’s finest throwers battle it out in an action-packed three weeks of pure darting bliss. Viewers this year can watch the entire event live on a dedicated Sky Sports Darts Channel, but who is your money on?

Michael ‘Mighty Mike’ Van Gerwen

The Dutch master has had an unbelievable year, picking up a staggering 25 PDC titles, making it the best season yet for a player that has been the game’s dominant force for almost half a decade. That said, it has been three years since MVG scooped his one and only big one, when he took out Peter Wright 7-4 in the 2014 final. Since September this year though, Van Gerwen has been unbeaten in all televised competitions and, as far as darts betting tips go, is understandably the odds-on favourite. No other competitor here goes in at such low odds since the Phil Taylor heyday ten years back, but such an unforgettable 12 months the 27-year-old has had that his price reflects little value. The world number one is the headline performer on the Saturday when he meets either Ross Snook or Kim Viljanen to get his challenge underway.

Gary ‘The Flying Scotsman’ Anderson

Reigning champion Gary Anderson is the first seed to get started, throwing his first darts on the opening Thursday. Should he win here, it will be third straight World Championship in a row following back to back victories in 2015 and 2016. Anderson has enjoyed a steady 2016 since his January success, winning occasionally (when Michael Van Gerwen lets him). As the number two seed, he finds himself on the MVG-free side of the draw which is worth its weight in gold as the Scotsman plots his path to another final. The world number two, some 710,000 points behind van Gerwen in the PDC Order of Merit, comes into the event off the back of winning several Masters and Players Championships, finishing second in the World Grand Prix. He is likely to be the strongest challenger to MVG.

Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor

The Power goes for a first world title since 2013 and his 17th overall, but the feeling persists that time is taking its toll on the greatest of them all. The 56-year-old is the game’s most successful ever player but was a recent spectator to Michael van Gerwen’s winning of the Players Championship Finals, the first tourney he has failed to qualify for, further demonstrating we have entered the twilight years of The Power’s career with even the man himself admitting that he plans to cut down his televised events next year. As he demonstrated when he took down September’s inaugural Champions League of Darts, Taylor still has the abilty to dig out the form of old when he needs to and you just cannot rule the guy out. Nor should you want to, the hugely popular Stoke born thrower is always a welcome victor and the king of the Ally Pally. He gets underway in Sunday’s evening session when he will take on either the PDPA Qualifier John Bowles or Oceanic Masters winner David Platt.

Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright

There is a growing feeling, to which I personally subscribe, that it is only a matter of time before Snakebite wins a proper televised tournament. A previous losing finalist here, Wright reached two televised finals and five Semis this season as he continues to pursue that elusive maiden major title. I have a feeling the hugely popular Wright is due a win and that it will come sooner rather than later, but I have been saying that for a while now so, MVG aside, I will stick with Snakebite a little longer. The world number three will play either Dutch qualifier Jerry Hendriks or New Zealand’s Warren Parry in the first round on Friday.

Adrian ‘Jackpot’ Lewis

Two-time World Champion Adrian Lewis came second last year, losing to Gary Anderson and will be looking to go one better this time around. Another to have had a quiet year, surviving on the fringes of MVG’s trophy haul, Jackpot has a knack of coming good and running deep at the Ally Pally, however, and cannot be ruled out of making the later stages once more, making him a sound each way darts betting tip if ever there was one. Both SkyBet and Bet365 will honour half of his 33/1 asking price for Lewis to make a second-place finish. Not bad for a player that has made the final here three times.  Stoke-born Lewis will have to wait until the Monday to get his campaign underway when he faces Sweden’s Magnus Caris.

Dave ‘Chizzy’ Chisnall

Chizzy is another looking to take down his first big title at the Ally Pally and, in a year where he has made three televised live finals and won a ranking title, the world number seven will move on to the World Championship in confident mood. Whether the recent Cash Converters finalist can convert that confidence into a World Championship win, remains to be seen. There is certainly some value on him to do so, especially at Bet365 where he can picked up for 28/1 for an outright victory. Unlike his rivals, Chizzy will need to wait an extra week until December 22, when he faces Austrian outsider Rowby-John Rodriguez.
