The Green Machine then punished The Iceman for missing two attempts at double 15 in the 10th leg to force a deciding leg in which they both combined to waste seven match darts before the Dutchman finally pinned his on his third attempt.

The result sees reigning Premier League champion MVG climb to the top of the Darts Premier League table on 10 points, one ahead of Michael Smith on nine and two ahead of Gerwyn Price who is on eight. Michael van Gerwen began Thursday night’s action with a 6-3 dismissal of Chris Dobey before moving on to winning by the same scoreline against Jonny Clayton in the last four.

Gerwyn Price had been hoping to win his second Premier League night of 2023 following his Night Two success in his home town of Cardiff, and he continued his decent start to this year’s competition to claim three points.

The 2021 World Champion produced a fantastic display to overcome Night Three runner up Dimitri Van den Bergh in their quarter final clash, averaging 104 and landing five 180s to secure a 6-4 win. The Iceman then moved on to post another ton plus average in his semi final demolition of Night Three winner Michael Smith, averaging 102 to win 6-1 against the World Champion.

Earlier on in the evening, Smith had come back from being 4-2 down to keep Peter Wright’s winless run in this year’s competition going, while Nathan Aspinall was Dublin’s other quarter final loser, after he was shot down 6-4 by Jonny Clayton.

Michael van Gerwen v Gerwyn Price

This week’s action kicks off where last week’s action closed, with MVG versus Gerwyn Price in a repeat of the final in Dublin. Despite the Dutchman eventually coming out on top, Price was arguably the star of the night in the Irish capital and had been more careful on his finishing he would have been the first two time nightly winner this season.

However, it was The Green Machine who banked the win, the points and the maximum prize money to go to the very summit of the DPL table. Winning six matches so far this season, the Dutchman has put together a leg differential of +11 following his Night Four triumph last time out.

Mighty Mike, who boasts the highest average in the tournament so far, just edged past The Iceman last week when averaging 94.40 compared to Price’s 91.94 and it wouldn’t surprise to see something similar in Exeter. MVG’s victory, however, was largely down to Price’s missed doubles and the Welshman really should have won a week ago. 

Sporting a green jersey, Price finally seems to be winning crowds over but this week sees the Premier League roadshow roll into England for the first time this season so expect the Arena to ring out in a chorus of boos once again. I hope not, but fear this will be the case and how Price responds to this will be critical. For that reason, Michael van Gerwen to win kicks off this week’s quarter final acca.

Nathan Aspinall v Michael Smith

Next up is Nathan Aspinall versus Michael Smith, with The Bully Boy aiming to reclaim the top spot in the Premier League Darts table. Smith beat Peter Wright last week before losing 6-1 to Gerwyn Price in the last four, missing out on a final match against van Gerwen.

The world number one from St Helens will be desperate to show a reaction to that drubbing where his highest checkout was just 41. Aspinall, who is still looking for his first night win, lost 6-4 to Jonny Clayton a week ago and has since dropped down to fourth in the table.

The Asp is more than capable of springing a surprise here but I am expecting him to struggle against Smith so I will be backing The Bully Boy to win and take on Michael van Gerwen in the semis.

Dimitri Van den Bergh v Chris Dobey

The third match of Night Five sees world number 11 Dimitri van den Bergh take on world number 21 Chris Dobey in a Belgium versus England clash. Both of these players have managed to win three games and they’re level on five points each although Dobey is one of our four players to win a night so far in the Premier League Darts.

Both men were eliminated in the quarter-finals last week in Dublin, with Gerwyn Price beating van den Bergh and Dobey losing against night winner Michael van Gerwen. This is a tough one to call but I’m leaning towards Hollywood Chris Dobey, but it might be worth looking into the 180s markets as well as van den Bergh has hit the second most out of the field after Michael van Gerwen’s 26.

Jonny Clayton v Peter Wright

Last up we have Jonny Clayton versus Peter Wright in a match that pitches second bottom against the very bottom. This year’s Premier League of darts really hasn’t gone to plan for Snakebite Peter Wright who is still searching for his first game win and his leg difference in the table reads -9.

On the other hand, Clayton has now at least won a couple of games and has claimed four points in the process. The Ferret beat Aspinall 6-4 last week before running into Michael van Gerwen in the semi finals. I think this one will go to the Welshman but it is also worth backing the under 5.5 maximums as these two are also the bottom two for 180s made in Premier League of Darts and that trend is unlikely to be broken this week in Exeter.

The 2023 Premier League of Darts lineup has been officially announced and as expected it includes the winner of this year’s Darts Masters tournament that reached its conclusion on Sunday night in Milton Keynes.

That man happens to be Chris Dobey who had a brilliant weekend and deservedly won his first-ever major televised PDC title. Beating a rejuvenated Rob Cross 11-7 in the final, the 32-year-old from Bedlington beat the former world champion having also knocked out world number 1 Michael Smith in the semi-final.

By far the biggest title of Dobey’s career so far, he will now be joining the other seven players selected for this year’s event.

We already knew that the top four on the PDC Order of Merit – Michael Smith, Peter Wright, Michael van Gerwen & Gerwyn Price – would be there. Following the conclusion of the Master’s tourney, the PDC have confirmed that the final three wildcard selections along with Dobey will be Jonny Clayton, Dimitri van den Bergh and Nathan Aspinall. 

World number five Luke Humphries will feel incredibly hard done by not being selected while Joe Cullen has already taken to social media to voice his unhappiness. Rob Cross, on the other hand, had already dismissed the tournament and its grueling four-month-long weekly schedule insisting he would rather stay at home with his family.

17 Nights Of Action

The Premier League Darts gets underway for the first of 17 nights of action beginning on Thursday night at the SSE Arena in Belfast.

The tournament will retain the same format that it successfully introduced in 2022, meaning all eight players will compete each Thursday night from February through May in a knock-out style format before the top four players from the final league table progress to the play offs.

The famous Belfast venue last year saw Gerwyn Price hit two nine-dart finishes on the same night and now stages the opening night for the first time. Other February cities include Cardiff, Glasgow and Dublin.

March begins in Exeter before Liverpool takes a turn hosting the event at the M&S Bank Arena which will now take place on March 9 to avoid clashing with the Eurovision Song Contest which will be held at the same arena. There will also be events in March held in Nottingham, Newcastle and Berlin.

Birmingham, Brighton, Rotterdam, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, and Aberdeen will all host events, before the top four players in the season-long league table standings will qualify for the play offs held at London’s O2 Arena on the 25^th of May.

The Darts Premier League table itself is decided by a series of mini-tournaments made up of weekly best of 11 legs quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a final with the following points up for grabs each night:

Bet365 Darts Premier League Betting Tips Night One: Belfast

Things get underway as Dimitri van den Bergh marks his Premier League of Darts return with a clash against 2021 champion Jonny Clayton which sees the world number 11 face off against the world number 7. It’s The Ferret from South Wales that boasts the better head-to-head between these two, winning three of the last five meetings between the pair. 

The Dream Maker from Belgium, on the other hand, was a surprise inclusion, especially given the omission of world number 5 Luke Humphries or world number 12 Joe Cullen, both of whom picked up title wins in 2022.

Dimitri lost 6-0 to Michael van Gerwen in their PDC World Championship semi-final last month and himself admitted that he was as surprised as anyone to be included in the Premier League eight. It is Clayton that is favoured to take the win in the first match of the night.

Dutch Revenge For Ally Pally Win

Next up, it’s the match of the night as the world number 1, Michael Smith, takes on Michael van Gerwen, the most successful darter still playing right now. Back at the Alexandra Palace just under a month ago, it was the Bully Boy who came out on top as he finally fulfilled his darting destiny and became world champion, even sinking a history-making nine-darter on the way. 

He then followed that up with a Bahrain Masters title by beating Gerwyn Price in the final but looked unconvincing at last week’s Darts Masters where he was dismissed 11-7 by Chris Dobey.

Mighty Mike wasn’t exactly in top form himself and lost out to Rob Cross but, purely because he still knows how to win when playing badly, we are still backing the Dutch darts master to get the job done and get revenge for his PDC World Championship defeat.

Snakebite To See Off Debutant

The night’s third quarter-final sees Peter Wright take on Chris Dobey, the latter of whom will be making his Premier League debut. The pair have only met twice on previous occasions with Snakebite coming out on top both times.

Two-time World Champion Wright is currently ranked second in the world behind Smith, whereas Dobey is the world number 2. Of course, this means nothing on the night and Dobey should be on a real high having joined the ranks of the major winners less than a week ago.

At the Masters, Wright was knocked out by Cross in the semi-final stage but overall, he did impress in the tournament, beating Dave Chisnall and Clayton and his experience should shine through and allow him to make it three wins out of three against Hollywood.

In Belfast, Wright has the darts against newcomer Chris Dobey in the quarter-finals, and would also be throwing first against either Nathan Aspinall or Gerwyn Price, before playing whoever emerges from the top half, possibly Michael van Gerwen, in the final.

Fitter Price To Freeze The Asp

Last up is a match against Nathan Aspinall and Gerwyn Price. The Iceman took to his social media channels to declare himself feeling much better this week than he did seven days ago in Milton Keynes where sickness may or may not have been the reason behind his shock elimination at the hands of the Aubergenius that is Dirk van Duijvenbode in the Round of 16.

And although he didn’t enjoy the best of PDC World Championships either — even coming out to play with ear defenders on– he was looking much sharper at the recent Bahrain Masters last month.

It was here that he reached the final before repeating the feat in Copenhagen. The Asp, on the other hand, has lost three of his last four matches at the Masters, the PDC World Championships and the Players Championship respectively so backing the Welshman to win just makes sense.

MVG To Defend His Crown

As for the outright winner, a lot can change between now and May. Given MVG’s overall consistency, which cannot be said for Peter Wright, Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith, you would have to favour six-time winner and the defending champion Michael van Gerwen. 

As an “outsider” I think a case can be made for 2021 Premier League champion Jonny Clayton. Not only is he a former winner, but the Ferret topped the table 12 months ago.

It seems a long time ago, but neither Smith, Wright, Price nor the Iceman has ever once finished in the top four.

Clayton seemed to enjoy the new format last year going on to win four times during the season and at 9/1 with bet365 is definitely worth a punt.

We now know who three of the final four 2022 Premier League of Darts play off finalists will be as Gerwyn Price became the latest player eliminated, leaving only Peter Wright and Joe Cullen in with a chance of bagging the final spot.

It was Cullen that won night 15 after winning in the final against Johnny Clayton, who himself is guaranteed to finish on top following another three points in the bag. 

In a thrilling final, The Rockstar beat Clayton 6-4 in which he was on top for much of the match before a 144 checkout from the Welshman looked like swinging the game.

Clayton was unable to lose Cullen, however, who held in there before seizing his chance when it came to him by hitting double eight for a 62 finish.

While Clayton banked the top spot by beating Michael Smith 6-4 in his semi-final, Michael van Gerwen cannot be caught in second place despite going out in the first round in a defeat to the Bully Boy.

As for Cullen, he made the final of night 15 following a brace of 6-1 wins over Scottish pair Gary Anderson and Peter Wright.

The Premier League roadshow now moves on to Newcastle’s Utilita Arena for the final night of regular Darts Premier League phase action on Thursday May 26, with Wright and Cullen facing off in a winner-takes-all clash.

Jonny Clayton v Gary Anderson

Guaranteed top plays guaranteed bottom to open up the night’s action as Jonny Clayton faces off against Gary Anderson.

That was always the plan for the new format of the competition which, for the most part, has been a success.

However, it does mean that we have a few blank squibs — this is one of them. Other than prize money, these two don’t really have anything to play for.

The Ferret has enjoyed a fantastic campaign, but the same cannot be said for Anderson, who has only banked five wins, three of which came on the same night.

Whether The Flying Scotsman will want to put on a show in his last match of this year’s tournament remains to be seen, but the form is with the Welshman, who confirmed Gerwyn Price’s elimination last week in the quarter-finals.

Clayton has now hit more 180s than anyone this season with 87, which works out to be 0.28 per leg.

He has also pinned 21 ton plus checkouts which is more than enough to keep faith with The Ferret this week.

Joe Cullen v Peter Wright

This is the match of the night as the world number one attempts to try and survive in this year’s Darts Premier League.

As we stand, it’s Cullen that occupies the fourth spot and so has the chance to throw first.

The Rockstar has twice this year benefitted from byes following quarter-final opponent withdrawals, meaning he has only technically won five first-round matches.

While there is no reason to assume he would have lost one or both of those matches, against Gerwyn Price and James Wade respectively, there is a touch of good fortune about The Rockstar going into the final match of this year’s campaign in the fourth spot.

Cullen has the lowest average out of all eight darters with 92.05 compared to Wright’s third-placed 96.68, while his finishing percentage is also the worst with a strike rate of just 37%.

The Rockstar did look good one week ago winning all three matches to keep his hopes alive but was thrashed 6-1 by Rowby-John Rodriguez in a European Tour event over the weekend.

At the same time, Peter Wright hit Jonny Clayton for the same score line and a 103 average.

Snakebite then managed a 111 in a 6-1 quarter-final win over Danny Noppert.

Cullen has the darts, but Snakey has the form so I’m siding with the Scotsman to bank the final play off spot.

Michael van Gerwen v Michael Smith

There’s another dead rubber in the night’s third match.

This is the fourth week running that Michael van Gerwen and Michael Smith have played each other and the sixth time this season.

It was a case of too little too late last week as the Bully Boy finally broke his 2022 duck against Mighty Mike.

That, however, proved to be in vain as losing to Jonny Clayton in the next round meant that Smith cannot now make it to Rotterdam.

While MVG has been the dominant player and is already through to the play offs, there isn’t much between them when they play.

Smith is now only playing for pride, and he remains the only player not to win a night title.

Apart from running into The Green Machine six times out of 24 games this season, which includes three semi finals and a final, his other three final four matches all came against the player of the tournament, Jonny Clayton, so he hasn’t had it easy.

With all of the other important business taken care of we’ll back The Bully Boy for one last shot at ‘glory’.

James Wade v Gerwyn Price

Back in February when the 2022 Darts Premier League was just getting started, Gerwyn Price was the bet365 darts betting favourite at 11/4.

At the same time, bet365 had put a 20/1 mark on the head of James Wade.

As it turns out, it’s the Machine that will have it all to play for when the play offs get underway on Monday May the 13^th and The Iceman won’t be there.

In hindsight, despite his average of 94.5 being among the lowest of the eight, the format turned out to be perfectly suited for Wade who is one of the hardest players to shake off and never gives up. 

He just hung on in there in a lot of his games and, as one of the best finishers on the circuit, simply picked off his rivals on a consistent basis throughout the campaign.

As for Gerwyn, he has enjoyed moments of bad luck during this year’s competition, missing a night through covid and breaking a hand.

The Iceman has only pinned two ton-plus averages in his past 14 Premier League of Darts games and they both came when he won his second night a fortnight ago in Sheffield.

Despite showing some true moments of brilliance, not least in Belfast where he blasted in a pair of nine darters on the same night, he has looked disinterested for the most part and I can’t see that changing here.
