Jonny Clayton is the Masters champion (Picture: Chris Dean/PDC)

The PDC swings back into life this Friday as the 2022 Masters in Milton Keynes gets underway bring together the top 24 players in the PDC Order of Merit for a three-day tourney right before the Darts Premier League kicks off in Cardiff next Thursday.

The top eight darts players, who are all likely to receive their invites for next week’s event, will each get a bye in the first round.

The current champion is Jonny Clayton whose success here 12 months ago helped him to qualify for the Premier League of Darts, an event he would go on to win as he got his fantastic 2021 season off to a flying start.

Year Of The Ferret

The Ferret’s Masters win made Clayton the fifth different winner in the nine years of this non-ranking event. Clayton now returns to retain his crown alongside fellow former Masters champions Peter Wright, James Wade and five-time champion Michael van Gerwen.

World number one Gerwyn Price will also be among the big names, aiming to get his hands on the trophy for the very first time when the tournament concludes on Sunday.

The Iceman failed to successfully defend his 2022 PDC World Championship title at the Ally Pally earlier in the month after he lost out to Michael Smith in the quarter-finals.

Price made the last four places here last year, his best Masters performance so far. That will be the minimum he will be expecting of himself this time around.

The 36-year-old lost here in 2021 to last year’s runner-up Mervyn King, who could provide Price with his first match should he overcome Ryan Searle on Friday.

That could lead him into direct conflict with fellow Welshman Clayton in what will certainly be a tough quarter-final match.

Price, who bet365 have priced up at 15/4, has won six of his last eight meetings with Clayton. If he does manage to overcome his compatriot in the last eight then he will win his quarter of the draw.

Bully Boy Can Be Backed For Maiden Win

The pre-tournament favourite according to bet365 is still Michael van Gerwen, despite only having won one PDC premier event in the last two years.

Far more encouraging was the Ally Pally form of Michael Smith, who enjoyed a spectacular run to the final of this year’s PDC World Championship.

The roll call of his victims in North London includes Clayton, Price and James Wade and, on form, few players are better to watch when he is in his full speedy flow.

Sadly for Bully Boy, it was yet another near miss as his search for his maiden PDC major title continues.

He is getting closer, though, and despite being a PDC event runner up on five other occasions, his performance this year suggests that the 2013 World Youth Champion is closer than ever to making his breakthrough.

Add that to the fact that Smith made this final in 2020, where he lost to his World Championship conqueror Peter Wright, and it makes Bully Boy look like a good shout this weekend.

He also looks like he has a fairly favourable route to the semi-finals, where he could face either Clayton or Price, both of whom he has beaten on the most recent occasions.

bet365 have put a reasonable price of 8/1 on Smith to win his first televised tournament title and this darts betting tips believes he can do just that.

Resurgent Superchin

There were also signs that Daryl Gurney was coming back into darting form at the Alexandra Palace either side of Christmas.

Superchin has a chance to continue his resurgence on the oche by overcoming Joe Cullen in round one of the Masters.

The Northern Irishman only played two matches at the worlds but was impressive on both occasions, his singing notwithstanding.

Gurney can be backed at bet365 for 66/1.

Rob Cross, who was eventually the man who did in for Superchin, is also looking resurgent.

Voltage has been priced up in the bet365 sportsbook at 22/1.

Elsewhere, Nathan Aspinall has withdrawn from the competition through injury, while Danny Noppert is also out after testing positive.

Scottish Threat

Another player looking for their first-ever Masters win is Gary Anderson.

The two-time world champion, who got married this week, made a run to this year’s World Championship semi-final stage for the second time in as many years, proving to doubters that he is still more than capable of competing on darts’ biggest stages.

Anderson made the Masters final five years ago and has also reached the semi-finals on three other occasions, so he knows exactly what it takes to go deep in this tournament.

‘The Flying Scotsman’ will take on either Joe Cullen or Daryl Gurney in his opening match, while Mighty Michael Van Gerwen and Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright, who beat Anderson in the semi-finals of the worlds, are also both on the same side of the draw.

On paper, that looks like a bumpy route to the final, which is reflected in his bet365 darts betting odds of 20/1, but with his experience and previous successes, it will not worry him one bit.

Speaking of Peter Wright, whose daughter got married this week (note, not to Gary Anderson), the recently crowned world champion will take on one from Dirk van Duijvenbode or last-minute Asp replacement Simon Whitlock, both of whom will hold no fears for Snakebite.

The 2021 PDC Player of the Year is available at 9/2 with bet365 darts betting to win the 2022 Darts Masters outright.

The Scotsman, who won the two biggest PDC tournaments of the year in 2021, just pipped Jonny Clayton for the recently announced Player of the Year award which was announced today.

Meanwhile, stay tuned to BettingDarts.com for the 2022 Masters Darts results after the event is over.

Peter Wright goes into the tournament as the defending champion, but it is Gerwyn Price who is the new world champion and also the new world number one, meaning this is the first time in seven years that Michael van Gerwen goes into a tournament ranked second in the world.

Odds for the PDC Darts Masters

Not that it has done anything for the odds. Mighty Mike begins this tourney as 5/2 favourite with bet365.

That said, this is probably the longest price we have seen on MVG in a long time. Given that he now plays with the pressure off, or at least dimmed, can he be expected to bounce back from his Ally Pally disappointment and claim this trophy for a sixth time? Yes, of course he can.

A win for the new world number one would see Gerwyn Price repeat what Peter Wright achieved this time last year and follow on the success in the World Championships by immediately taking down the Masters too. One thing is for sure, the Iceman won’t rest on his win at the worlds and has the sporting drive to push on and have another great year.

Not seeing anyone throw since the festive season, we have no idea about current form for any of the 24 competing darters, but it would, at first glance, seemingly come down to two things as to who wins this first new event of the season. Whether a stung Michael van Gerwen is looking for revenge or whether a buoyed Gerwyn Price is in invincible mode.

These two are quite a bit above everyone else right now after all so the answer to the above could unlock the next destination of the Masters trophy.

Gerwyn’s Price is 3/1 at bet365

These two, along with Rob Cross, James Wade, Nathan Aspinall, Dave Chisnall, Gary Anderson and Peter Wright, will all wait out the first night and join in play during in Saturday’s second round.

This means that there are plenty of interesting match ups on day one and some potentially explosive games likely on day two.

Nathan Aspinall could face either Ian White or Mensur Suljovic, while Glen Durrant takes on Mervyn King for the chance to play Rob Cross in the second stage. Looking at Duzza’s post Premier League form, Mervyn King looks a good shout to run deep here and wont fear Cross right now should that play out.

Elsewhere, there are several players who must do well to stand a chance of getting that last Premier League spot. The potential eye-catcher in regards to the Premier League participation is the possible matchup between world number six Dave Chisnall and Daryl Gurney, should Superchin make it past Jeffrey de Zwaan in the first round.

Bet365 odds wise, Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright is 7/1, which is half the value offered on Gary Anderson who may be inspired after making the final at the Alexandra Palace. Punters can get 16/1 on Dimitri van den Bergh should they be looking for it, while Nathan Aspinall is available at 16/1.

Bully Boy Michael Smith, who will surely be the most disappointed to miss out on a Premier League place, can be backed at 20/1. It’s the same price that’s being offered on Dave Chisnall, who so brilliantly dismissed MVG a little over a month ago.

2020 Darts Masters Betting Tips

With a month passing since Peter ‘Snakebite’ Wright was crowned world champion, the players return this weekend for the 2020 Darts Masters, made up of the top 16 players on the PDC Order of Merit. Play takes place from January 31-February 2 at the Marshall Arena in Milton Keynes and we now know the full draw and schedule for the event which will be broadcast live on ITV 4.

Michael van Gerwen, still the world’s number one, will be shooting for six in a row here as his customary way of opening the season. The five time defending champion banked an easy 11-5 win over James Wade in last year’s final but defeat in the final at the Ally Pally one month ago will only serve as extra motivation and, with a month off, the Dutchman will be fresh to take on all comers this weekend. Mighty Mike will take on the lowest-ranked player in the field, Wales’ Jonny Clayton in his opener and is an outright price of 11/10 at Betway.

World number two Gerwyn Price went into the World Championships as many people’s favourite, looking likely to provide the biggest threat to the tournament favourite Michael van Gerwen. Despite a very strong end to 2019, such a challenge at the Worlds wasn’t to be after being out-thought in the battle of the mind games that was the semi-final against Peter Wright. Similar to Wright, it will be interesting to see what 2020 holds for in store for The Iceman. It will clearly be a big year for him and this tourney represents the ideal opportunity to lay down an early-season marker. Despite a first round exit twelve months ago, a much deeper run is expected of him this time around. 11/2 is his quoted price at Betway.

World champion Peter Wright recently enjoyed by far the biggest moment of his career, so far at least, shaking off his perennial choker’s tag in the process when he won at the Alexandra Palace. What this all means is that he will enjoy a flood of bets of his success now as the pressure mounts on the Scot to carry on winning. It’s an interesting question to ponder, what the season ahead holds for Snakebite.

After all, last year was almost one his worst ever seasons but, in true Peter Wright style where nothing is straight forward, right on his last throw of the season, it ended being his best on record. Snakebite was a losing semi-finalist last time out here and prior to that a quarter-finalist four years in a row. On the back of his Ally Pally victory he has been installed as the third favourite at 6/1, again with Betway.

James Wade
is the only player in the line-up other than Michael van Gerwen who has been to more than one Masters final. After winning in 2014, he lost out in last year’s final to MVG and is considered to be a 33/1 shot to go one better this week. Anyone interested in Gary ‘The Flying Scotsman’ Anderson returning to the top of his sport in 2020 will be tempted by the 10/1 on him getting the new season off to a winnings start, just ahead of Rob Cross’ 12/1 which follows his disappointing World Championships.

Elsewhere, debutant Nathan Aspinall’s stock continues to rise following back to back semi-final appearances at the PDC World Championships. The Asp has even qualified for next month’s Darts Premier League and this could prove to be the breakout year for the 28-year-old who is rated as a 20/ shot with the online bookmaker Betway to win in Milton Keynes.
