Premier Leagues Darts Night 14

Night 13 of the Darts Premier League recap

On a night of ties in Birmingham, there was only one winner – Daryl Gurney – and one loser – Peter Wright – as three of the four matches ended in a 7-7 draw.

For Gurney, the 8-4 result did wonders for his chances of reaching the Premier League playoffs, as he moves to within a point of the top four. For Snakebite, it means he now props up the others as he sinks to the bottom where he displaces Michael ‘Bully Boy’ Smith. Superchin averaged just below 100 while hitting four 180s and seeing success with 8 of his 14 attempts at doubles. He also hit three ton-plus checkouts, one of which helped him establish a 6-4 lead not long before he banked 81 to finish off a match-winning 12-darter. Overall, Wright managed an average of 96.04, hitting just the one lonely maximum and recording a 50% checkout rate making his chances of making it to London fade out of sight.

At the other end of the table, birthday boy Michael van Gerwen couldn’t get past James Wade, who put in another superb effort against the World number one, beating MVG for the second time this Premier League season. It was an entertaining match that was going with throw until The Machine moved into a 7-5 lead. But on his 30th birthday, MVG — who lost 7-3 when they last met in Exeter back in February — soon reeled off back-to-back legs in 12 and 13 darts to tie the match and maintain his one-point lead at the top of the table. By the end of the thrilling contest showdown, in which all legs were won in 15 or fewer, the world champion had averaged 106.78 over Wade’s 103.66.

The point between Mighty Mike and Rob Cross stayed intact, Voltage was unable to secure a win against Gerwyn Price earlier in the night. In fact, Price, who averaged 101.18, was unlucky not to win as he had Cross on the hook only to fail to convert any of his four-match darts to let his opponent back into the game and save the match. Having initially fallen 3-1 behind, The Iceman then turned the game on its head to lead 6-4 and then 7-5, from where he let the game slip away. Cross, who averaged 97.81, struck back with a late rally to claim a point and keep him in second place.

The night’s other draw saw Mensur Suljovic fight back from 6-2 down to draw 7-7 with Michael Smith. The whole Premier League season has played out this way for Bully Boy, who has performed far better than his position suggests. He did move up a place off the bottom as Peter Wright sits underneath, but far too many times this season he has thrown away a commanding lead.

Up 6-2 up, Smith was required to win the last leg to save a point. Suljovic began his comeback with a superb checkout of 120 to reduce the gap to 6-3 before reeling in Bully Boy with a string of legs that included a finish from 84 for a 12-darter. From 6-6, the Austrian sealed a 116 checkout to move ahead for the first time in the match before Bully Boy landed a double eight with his last dart in hand to square the score.

Premier League of Darts Betting Tips Week 14

This week the action moves to Manchester with James Wade and Gerwyn Price the first pair to step up to the oche. Third-placed Wade has his sights firmly set on London after producing another brilliant display against Michael van Gerwen and almost completed a competition double over the Dutchman. In the end, The Machine was forced to settle for a draw, but given the quality of the opposition, I doubt he will be too troubled in his match against Price. The Iceman, though, is another who is at the top of his game right now and is currently occupying the final playoff place. This is a match that really could go either way but given Wade has won six of their 10 matches, I’m plumping on The Machine to be victorious in Manchester, even if a draw wouldn’t surprise.

Michael van Gerwen will play Daryl Gurney in the following matchup and its hard to see the league leader coming away with anything other than the maximum points. Last week, Mighty Mike was forced to dig deep against James Wade while Gurney was the only player to win in Birmingham. The pair have met 23 times in the past, with MVG coming out on top in 18 of them. Bear in mind that it was actually Superchin who won their last two, although I doubt very much he will win this one .

Match three pairs Mensur Suljovic and bottom-placed Peter Wright, where the smart money should go on the Austrian. Although Suljovic failed to win last week against Michael Smith, he is chasing a playoff spot and is currently in fifth place. In contrast, Snakebite was last week’s only loser and looks to be in a very dark place at the moment, while his chances of making it to the O2 are shot. Wright hasn’t won now for almost two months — eight matches to be exact — while The Gentle has won seven of their last eight meetings and should continue his winning streak this Thursday.

Finally, I would expect Rob Cross to beat Michael Smith in the last game of the night. Cross remains hot on the heels of Michael van Gerwen after saving a point last week against Gerwyn Price. Smith has suffered a disappointing campaign and is way off the pace in a competition he came second in last year. On that note and with more to play for, Voltage — who has won 11 of their 14 matches — has the beating of Bully Boy and should take maximum points again this time too.

Your Betway acca for the week is, then, as follows; James Wade, Michael van Gerwen, Mensur Suljovic and Rob Cross, which pays 11.18/1.

  • (5/4) James Wade v Gerwyn Price (6/4)
  • (11/2) Daryl Gurney v Michael van Gerwen (4/11)
  • (2/1) Peter Wright v Mensur Suljovic (10/11)
  • (10/11) Rob Cross v Michael Smith (2/1)

Gerwyn Price And Michael van Gerwen Win In Cardiff

Gerwyn Price And Michael van Gerwen Win In Cardiff

Gerwyn Price wins at the Darts Premier League

For once Gerwyn Price enjoyed the support of the crowd as the Welshman beat Michael Smith 8-5 in Cardiff last week.

It was an inspired performance in which the former rugby player hit back-to-back 170 checkouts at the Motorpoint Arena. The first of checkouts drew The Iceman level after Bully Boy had hit a 170 checkout of his own when taking the third. The bottom-placed Smith badly needed a win and forced his way in front twice more only to see The Iceman peg him back again. This was followed by arguably the leg of series, which featured four successive 180s from the pair before Price came out on top. From there, Price had little trouble from a deflated Smith before he closed out the match with an 11-darter.

In the battle for first place, Michael van Gerwen is now in the driver’s seat after putting challenger Rob Cross firmly in his place with an 8-2 demolition job. Voltage started stronger, breaking immediately and racing into a 2-0 lead thanks to an 80 checkout, before the match switched completely as MVG took over. After Voltage missed his shot at tops in the third, Mighty Mike made him pay with a 13-dart break of throw before punishing him completely and reeling off the next seven legs. This left Cross to go the rest of the night without getting another shot at a double.

The scoreline was repeated in the match between James Wade and Peter Wright with The Machine coming up the victor. Wright was woeful again and caused Wade, who remains third in the table, little to no problems. The Machine won five legs in succession from 3-2 up, and before The Machine chucked his match-winning double, Wright had missed eight of his own, which included four in that final leg. Wright, who is famous for switching his darts between — and sometimes even during matches — was using a new wobbly set which made absolutely no difference to his form as he succumbed to his fifth loss of the campaign.

The night’s final match was a playoff battle between Mensur Suljovic and Daryl Gurney with the Austrian just about managing to come out on top in an 8-5 victory. The result gives The Gentle a two-point lead over Superchin as he moves into 4th place with London looming. It was another scrappy affair and either player could have won.

Indeed, Gurney wasted 19 of 24 double attempts that would have made all the difference. He even blew a bullseye attempt for a 170 checkout in the third. It provided Suljovic with the opportunity he needed, duly replying with a close from 100 in 14 darts. Things were all square after six legs before Suljovic landed back-to-back legs in 13 and 14 darts, which established a two-gap lead that would last long enough to guarantee the Austrian a point. Gurney did manage to pull one back but Suljovic soon got himself over the line by taking the following leg and with it the match.

Premier League Darts Betting Tips

With The O2 just a month away now, Mensur Suljovic is firmly in the hunt for a playoff spot in fifth place as he shares points with James Wade and Gerwyn Price. In contrast, Michael Smith, who was the 2018 runner up, is currently bottom and another defeat last week only further dents his chances. Suljovic beat him 7-2 on night seven and with it all to play for, the Austrian could well repeat that scoreline again here in Birmingham.

The night’s second match features the challengers Rob Cross and Gerwyn Price. 2nd place Cross was on the wrong end of a spanking a week ago, while Price — currently in 4th with 14 points — defeated Bully Boy. In truth, come the end of May, I would expect both players to make the final four based on current form, but as things stand this week should see Voltage spark back into life and take the points. That said, don’t be surprised to see the unpredictable Iceman threaten the 2018 world champ who has won four of their six meetings.

The only things unpredictable about Peter Wright right now are his hair colour and choice of dart. His Premier League form has been nothing short of woeful for a man of his talent with little chance of making it to the playoffs. Superchin, on the other hand, is still in the hunt, even if he can be considered an outsider. Both players lost last week but Gurney at least held his own in defeat and should beat Snakebite, who left Cardiff embarrassed at the hands of James Wade.

Finally, Michael van Gerwen takes on James Wade, who is one of three players sitting on 14 points. Mighty Mike stamped his class and his authority on the league last week as he squashed Rob Cross and averaged 107 almost without reply. In contrast in his match, Wade averaged only 94 but still won out 8-2 — the same as MVG — and will be in confident mood having won three PDC titles relatively recently. The Machine also beat Van Gerwen in the Premier League earlier on this season, but the Dutchman will have too much for him on this occasion.

The following line at Betway on Thursday night’s action pays 16/1; Mensur Suljovic, Rob Cross, Daryl Gurney and Michael van Gerwen.

  • (6/4) Mensur Suljovic v Michael Smith (13/10)
  • (10/11) Rob Cross v Gerwyn Price (9/4)
  • (5/4) Daryl Gurney v Peter Wright (13/8)
  • (9/2) James Wade v Michael van Gerwen (4/9)

Michael van Gerwen And Rob Cross Keep Up The Heat In Liverpool

Rob Cross Wins again in Darts Premier League

Michael van Gerwen
kept up the pressure on top of the table Rob Cross, after hammering Michael Smith 8-3 at Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena on Thursday night. Mighty Mike averaged 109.11 in a contest that was a repeat of last year’s final and soon, racinginto a 4-0 lead. Smith finally entered the contest in the fifth, striking back with the first of two 12-darters, the second of which only came after MVG had collected an additional two legs for himself. There was one more leg for Bull Boy before MVG sealed the win with checkouts from 76 and 80 to keep the heat on Cross before their top of the table clash this week.

A Recap of Night 11

It’s Voltage who remains in first place after defeating Peter Wright 8-5 despite suffering from a recent bout of tonsillitis. Having pulled out of Sunday’s Players Championship event, there were fears that the Hastings thrower would also miss out in Liverpool. These concerns proved unfounded, much to Snakebite’s misfortune, who now finds himself one off the bottom. Cross averaged 102, the eighth time in 11 matches that he has recorded a three figure average, while Wright banked just over 100. Cross took out 140 as he marched into a 3-0 lead and before long found himself up 6-2 after he finished with 105. Snakebite threatened a comeback by taking three of the next four legs before Voltage sealed victory with an 11-darter. The 2018 World Champion has now won seven out of his last eight games to retain his cushion ahead of Michael van Gerwen as he moves closer to securing a playoff spot.

Gerwyn Price moved into a playoff position after leapfrogging Mensur Suljovic in a poor quality affair in which neither player averaged higher than 90. Hitting just two maximums each and failing to produce a checkout above 100 between them, this scrappy match was one to forget. Stretching his unbeaten run to three, The Iceman won’t be too bothered as The Gentle’s challenge begins to fade after a poor couple of weeks for the Austrian who was this week shot down 8-5. After falling behind 3-0, Suljovic struck back with four legs on the trot before Price reeled off four of his own. Then they split the final two legs to give the Welshman the points.

Third place in the table belongs to James Wade after he bagged a point courtesy of a 7-7 draw with Daryl Gurney. The Machine was forced to fight back from two down on three separate occasions when at 3-1, 4-2 and 5-3. But after hanging in the game he looked the more likely to emerge victorious as Gurney needed to take the decider to draw level, something he achieved with a superb 10-darter. Wade averaged 90 compared to 104 from Superchin, who will regret his eight missed doubles in one leg while ahead 5-3. That was where the game turned as Wade took three legs on the spin before Gurney hit back with an impressive 11-darter.

Premier League Darts Betting Tips – Week 12

Following his draw with James Wade, Daryl Gurney has continued to stutter in recent weeks but should get back to his winning ways this week in Cardiff. Superchin lines up against Mensur Suljovic, who came off worse in a scrappy match last time out against Gerwyn Price. Neither player is currently in the top four, and in truth neither look as though they will be unless they find form and soon. There are only five weeks remaining, but going by past results, Suljovic has lost both Premier League meetings with Gurney, a record that will likely be stretched to three.

Match two is the big one, Michael van Gerwen versus Rob Cross in a meeting of the top two. Mighty Mike is unbeaten in four matches and easily pushed aside Michael Smith last week. If anything, it was MVG’s best performance in the league so far this year, which is good timing as he takes on Voltage who is also in the form of his life right now. Overall, Cross has a poor record against Van Gerwen, save for the 2018 World championship semi-final. The Dutchman has won 13 of their 16 meetings, winning all four of their Premier League showdowns, so the smart money goes on him.

Next out are Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith with The Iceman expected to bully the Bully Boy in front of his home crowd. The Welsh former rugby player has responded to a run of three straight defeats with a three match unbeaten run, including almost toppling MVG a fortnight ago and beating Suljovic last week. Smith, on the other hand, has been poor all year and is now a point adrift at the bottom of the table. Last year’s runner-up has won 12 of their last 17 matches, but Price is in form and will, for once, be cheered by an enthusiastic home crowd in Wales.

The night’s final action sees James Wade take on beat Peter Wright who has struggled badly in the Premier League this season. Wade, third on leg difference, shouldn’t have any need to worry here as the real Pete Wright is still yet to stand up and it will soon be too late. Away from the Premier League, Snakebite’s form has been superb, claiming three PDC titles in eight days, but the league is the big thing in darts right now and there his form has been appalling. The same thing can’t be said about The Machine who will fancy his chances of banking a win here and so do we.

This week’s Betway Darts Premier League acca is as follows; Daryl Gurney, Michael van Gerwen, Gerwyn Price and James Wade which pays at 20.87/1.

  • (13/8) Mensur Suljovic v Daryl Gurney (6/5)
  • (100/30) Rob Cross v Michael van Gerwen (4/7)
  • (6/5) Michael Smith v Gerwyn Price (13/8)
  • (6/4) Peter Wright v James Wade (13/10)
