Michael Smith won his first Darts Premier League night of the new season, making it three different winners in as many weeks. The Bully Boy beat Dimitri van den Bergh 6-4 in Thursday’s Glasgow final at the OVO Hydro.

Earlier on in the evening, the world champion had seen off Gerwyn Price in their quarter-final tie, before coming back from 4-2 down to win his semi-final against the tourney’s other Welshman, Jonny Clayton, in a deciding leg.

His best display, however, came in the final where he averaged 109.42 to claim the night and move to the top of the DPL table. In the final, Smith had previously led 2-0 and 3-1 before van den Bergh took out 86 on the bull in response. Smith then produced a 140 finish for a 12 darter to maintain the gap.

Legs of 13 and 14 darts from the Belgian Dream Maker saw him claw back into contention at 5-4, but hopes were short-lived as The Bully Boy effortlessly took out double ten to bring a memorable night in Scotland to a close.

In the earlier rounds, Peter Wright’s miserable run of form continued. Snakebite finds himself rooted to the bottom of the table and has failed to make it past the first round in three attempts, losing every game and failing to bank so much as a point.

This week he was shot down by Dimitri van den Bergh 6-4 who progressed into a second-round match with Nathan Aspinall. The Belgian then produced a sensational display in the last four, defeating The Asp 6-1 with a 105.73 average to please the Glasgow crowd.

Wright is the only player left not to have claimed a league point, after Jonny Clayton finally managed to get some scores on the board after picking up his first win as he averaged 103 in a 6-1 defeat of Chris Dobey, who was the winner of Night One.

Night Three’s other quarter-final loser was Michael van Gerwen. The reigning Premier League champion pinned a 170 checkout as he came back from 4-1 against Aspinall to force a deciding leg, which was edged by The Asp as a wayward Mighty Mike sprayed his darts all over the place.

The Premier League of Darts roadshow now rolls into Dublin’s 3 Arena on Thursday the 23rd of February for Night Four. World number one Smith will take on world number two Wright, while Michael van Gerwen faces Chris Dobey, Gerwyn Price meets Dimitri Van den Bergh and Jonny Clayton plays Nathan Aspinall in what is sure to be another cracking night of brilliant darting action. But who will come out on top in the Irish capital?

Michael Smith v Peter Wright

Top takes on the bottom in the opening match in Dublin as the world’s top two players in the PDC Order of Merit clash. Unsurprisingly, Michael Smith is the favourite to win this opener after putting in some superb performances and triumphing in Glasgow last time out. Bully Boy’s Premier League of Darts campaign is now firmly up and running and he has averaged 100+ in four of his six matches so far.

The St Helens star chose to give last weekend’s Players Championship events a miss in order to get some well-earned rest following a hectic start to the 2023 season so expect him to come out all guns blazing and firing on all cylinders with plenty of finishing and maximums.

The Bully Boy threw 10 180s in 30 legs last week after only managing a mere four across the opening couple of weeks. He also weighed in with at least one ton plus checkout in each of his three matches in Scotland.

Pointless Peter Wright is without a win in the Premier League and I don’t think that is going to get any better on the other side of the Irish Sea. It isn’t that he is playing particularly badly from a scoring perspective – he’s still managed to land four 100+ checkouts in the 10 legs he has won so far.

However, he has been sloppy with his doubles finishing and, given Smith’s form, that surely cannot continue if he is going to finally bank some points this week. For this reason, I’m backing Michael Smith to win in Dublin.

Gerwyn Price v Dimitri Van den Bergh

Having won so well in Cardiff, Gerwyn Price made a real mess of things in Glasgow averaging just shy of 90 in what was a scrappy quarter-final defeat to Michael Smith. Such streaky performances mean that it is hard to tell exactly what we can expect from him at the moment.

He has, of course, won a night but he is still to show us his epic blockbuster best when it comes to averages in any of the three weeks we have had so far. His best being 97.32 from his five games played.

Dimitri van den Bergh went on an encouraging run in Glasgow last week where he treated us to a superb 6-1 win over Nathan Aspinall where he averaged 105.73. It is no surprise, then, that the Dream Maker is landing his maximums significantly more regularly than The Iceman at 0.33 per leg compared to the Welshman’s 0.22 and, based on last week alone, that is enough for me to go with the Belgian this week.

Jonny Clayton v Nathan Aspinall

It looks very much as though Jonny Clayton might be about to come into a rich vein of form following a less-than-impressive start to the season. Despite his struggles to pick up Premier League wins, The Ferret has been playing pretty well and last week averaged 102.56 in a 6-1 win over Chris Dobey, who himself averaged 101.6.

The Welshman also looked in good form when producing another fine display in a narrow 6-5 defeat to eventual Night Three winner Michael Smith.

Over the weekend, at the Pro Tour events, he averaged 100+ in five out of his eight matches, including a high of 111.95 on Saturday. On Sunday, he followed that up with a 104.48 when he lost to eventual Players Championship 4 champion Dirk van Duijvenbode, who posted 108.08 in the same game.

If The Ferret can get past Nathan Aspinall – and despite his opponent winning more Premier League matches so far this season, I think he will – then I wouldn’t back against him to win the night, let alone this quarter-final tie.

The Asp blew hot and cold last week, stunning Michael van Gerwen 6-5 in an untidy night opener before averaging 88.18 in a miserable 6-1 loss to Dimitri van den Bergh in the semis. He faired much the same over the weekend too which is why I have opted for Welshman this week.

Aspinall has, however, been landing 180s much more prolifically than Clayton this season, with 0.35 per leg in the Premier League and 0.31 on the Pro Tour. The Ferret’s respective rates are 0.20 and 0.28.

Chris Dobey v Michael van Gerwen

Michael van Gerwen had been going along smoothly in this year’s Premier League of Darts until things came to an abrupt end last week. Mighty Mike has headed to Glasgow sitting pretty at the top of an admittedly early Premier League table but a shock opening night defeat to Hollywood Chris Dobey knocked him off his perch and the Dutchman will now be out for revenge in this week’s rematch.

This short first to six legs format can prove to be a real leveller and, even when he’s averaging big numbers like he did against Gerwyn Price a week previously where he posted a score of 110, it wasn’t enough for MVG who was also well below his best last week when he lost to Nathan Aspinall. I expect The Green Machine to win here tonight but bet365’s 4/6 is a little short for my liking, especially given that he is coming up against a player who has figured out how to beat him.

Hollywood scored very well when losing to Jonny Clayton last week where he averaged close to 102. However, he blew nine out of his attempts at double and that can’t happen again if is to bank at least two more points in Dublin. Despite the fact that he has only managed just one maximum in his last two matches, which is 18 legs, I fancy Dobey to pin the most 180s. It will be unlikely to save him, however.

Less than a week since he landed his first-ever televised PDC major, Chris Dobey won the opening night of the 2023 Premier League of Darts in Belfast. Hollywood stunned Michael van Gerwen with a superb 160 checkout in the final and deciding leg to win the opening night of the Premier League Darts season at the SSE Arena.

Making his tournament debutant, Dobey earned his place among the DPL 8 thanks to winning the Darts Masters at the back end of January and kicked off the night by proving he deserves to be here among the best in the world by putting an end to Peter Wright’s night with 104 average and a 6-3 victory.

The North Easterner then moved on to a hard-fought 6-4 win over Nathan Aspinall before meeting up with Michael van Gerwen in the final. Mighty Mike himself had already beaten world champion Michael Smith 6-3 with a 102 average, a mark that was raised to 106 in his second game of the evening, a 6-4 defeat of Dimitri Van den Bergh.

After initially going a leg down, Dobey produced magnificent 170 checkout in the second leg to restore parity and before long had gone 3-1 ahead against the defending champion. MVG managed to bring things back level in a race to six and the rest all went with the throw leading to a deciding set.

Dobey had the throw in the leg and made full use of it, closing out the win with a blockbuster 160 finish that sent the crowd wild.

The Premier League of Darts roadshow now moves on to Cardiff for Night Two.

Michael Smith v Jonny Clayton

Much was expected of Michael Smith a week ago so it was very disappointing to see him knocked out in the first-round match against Michael van Gerwen.  Last year, the Bully Boy was the last man in the tournament to pick up a night win and he won’t want that to happen this time around.

The world number one goes into this match as the heavy favourite in spite of a poor performance in Northern Ireland. bet365 are giving 8/15 for the Bully Boy to make it through to the semis and are clearly not expecting it to be a particularly close contest. But then nobody thought that his MVG match last week would have been so one-sided. Smith even averaged over 100 so it’s not as if he played that poorly.

On night two of this year’s Premier League, Smith lost out to this week’s opponent Jonny Clayton, succumbing to a 6-3 defeat leaving the Ferret to win the night in Liverpool a week after losing the final to Peter Wright in front of his loyal Welsh fans in Cardiff.

Not many hang on in there quite like Clayton and even when he is seriously up against it, the Ferret can dig some big numbers out of the bag, so I don’t see this one as being as clear-cut as the odds suggest. Clayton was also knocked out in his first match on night one and he too will be hoping to improve and rediscover the winning formula that made him champion in this event a few years back.

The Welshman had climbed as high as seventh in the world rankings back then but after a bumper 2021 he has gone somewhat off the boil, hence the 6/4 offered by bet365 to win this tie. He is also 12/1 to win the night outright but, unless he can bring his A game in this opener it might be tough for him in what will be a home fixture in the Welsh capital.

Clayton averaged 101 seven days ago but was punished for his dodgy doubling by Dimitri Van den Bergh. It is also worth noting that the Welshman has got the better of Smith in seven of their 11 meetings in 2022.

However, as far as their six Premier League meetings is concerned they couldn’t be split winning three apiece and while I expect Smith to pin the higher amount of 180s, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the local hero prevail.

Nathan Aspinall v Peter Wright

The second of the evening’s quarter-finals sees Nathan Aspinall take on Peter Wright in another match-up between a pair that will be hoping to improve on their previous round’s performance which saw neither man reach the last two, both being shot down by Chris Dobey.

Snakebite actually outgunned Hollywood last week, averaging close to eight points higher with 103.77 but the debutant was stronger on the doubles which paved the way for an opening-night triumph.

Despite putting in a poor show seven days ago and getting knocked out in the first round, Peter Wright is the much shorter of the two in the betting at 8/13 to claim the win, making Nathan Aspinall the underdog at 13/10, even though he made it to the semi-final.

Snakebite will be looking to bank his first points of the new season and judging by how well he’s been playing since the start of 2022, last week not included, it shouldn’t be too long before he recovers from this dip in form.

It was Aspinall who dumped the Scotsman out of the Grand Slam of Darts at the group stage in November, however, so Wright will need to push his recent loss to the Asp out of his head if he is to progress to the next round in Cardiff. Wright has a good chance of winning here if he can find his top level and sustain it for long enough and could even make it to the final and win the night outright, something that bet365 have priced him up to do at 11/2.

Of course, Aspinall will have something to say about that, and we have seen him play at his best on a number of occasions this year, so he can’t be written off completely and at 11/8, he offers good value and a punt that is far from hopeless. It is also worth noting that the Asp actually has a very good record against Snakebite and has taken five of their seven televised matches.

Gerwyn Price v Chris Dobey

Playing in Cardiff should mean that Gerwyn Price will finally have a crowd on his side. However, that didn’t seem to make much of a difference last year when he lost 6-3 to James Wade in round one with a low 89 average. The Iceman was also unable to find his rhythm last week as he lost out to Nathan Aspinall in a 6-4 first-round defeat in which he averaged just 91.

Despite this, bet365 have put an 8/15 price on his head to overcome Chris Dobey, who is oozing confidence right now. That’s not particularly good value giving the way that Hollywood is performing at the moment. Dobey has been incredibly consistent of late, averaging between 94.05 and 96.94 in his last eight matches.

Of course, if the Iceman can conjure up another one of his blockbuster performances then Dobey could well find himself in trouble but it is hard to see where those are coming from at the moment. Based on last week, Dobey is favoured to come through his opener.

Michael van Gerwen v Dimitri Van den Bergh

Michael van Gerwen narrowly missed out on first place last week and will back himself to go one place better this time around. Understandably, he is the favourite to win night two outright at 9/5 and as thin as 3/10 to win his match against Dimitri Van den Bergh and progress to the semi-final for the second Darts Premier League night in a row.

MVG did produce massively impressive levels in his other two matches last week where he averaged 102 against Michael Smith and 106 against this week’s opponent Dimitri Van den Bergh, who could only manage 91.61. His Belgian opponent is 5/2 to take the win but looking at his recent form where he has lost four of his last six matches, he will certainly have to dig deep against the Dutch 148-time PDC title winner.

2023 Premier League Darts Line Up And Night One Betting Tips

darts premier league night 1

The 2023 Premier League of Darts lineup has been officially announced and as expected it includes the winner of this year’s Darts Masters tournament that reached its conclusion on Sunday night in Milton Keynes.

That man happens to be Chris Dobey who had a brilliant weekend and deservedly won his first-ever major televised PDC title. Beating a rejuvenated Rob Cross 11-7 in the final, the 32-year-old from Bedlington beat the former world champion having also knocked out world number 1 Michael Smith in the semi-final.

By far the biggest title of Dobey’s career so far, he will now be joining the other seven players selected for this year’s event.

We already knew that the top four on the PDC Order of MeritMichael Smith, Peter Wright, Michael van Gerwen & Gerwyn Price – would be there. Following the conclusion of the Master’s tourney, the PDC have confirmed that the final three wildcard selections along with Dobey will be Jonny Clayton, Dimitri van den Bergh and Nathan Aspinall

World number five Luke Humphries will feel incredibly hard done by not being selected while Joe Cullen has already taken to social media to voice his unhappiness. Rob Cross, on the other hand, had already dismissed the tournament and its grueling four-month-long weekly schedule insisting he would rather stay at home with his family.

17 Nights Of Action

The Premier League Darts gets underway for the first of 17 nights of action beginning on Thursday night at the SSE Arena in Belfast.

The tournament will retain the same format that it successfully introduced in 2022, meaning all eight players will compete each Thursday night from February through May in a knock-out style format before the top four players from the final league table progress to the play offs.

The famous Belfast venue last year saw Gerwyn Price hit two nine-dart finishes on the same night and now stages the opening night for the first time. Other February cities include Cardiff, Glasgow and Dublin.

March begins in Exeter before Liverpool takes a turn hosting the event at the M&S Bank Arena which will now take place on March 9 to avoid clashing with the Eurovision Song Contest which will be held at the same arena. There will also be events in March held in Nottingham, Newcastle and Berlin.

Birmingham, Brighton, Rotterdam, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, and Aberdeen will all host events, before the top four players in the season-long league table standings will qualify for the play offs held at London’s O2 Arena on the 25th of May.

The Darts Premier League table itself is decided by a series of mini-tournaments made up of weekly best of 11 legs quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a final with the following points up for grabs each night:

Winner: 5 points

Runner Up: 3 points

Semi Finalists: 2 points

Bet365 Darts Premier League Betting Tips Night One: Belfast

Things get underway as Dimitri van den Bergh marks his Premier League of Darts return with a clash against 2021 champion Jonny Clayton which sees the world number 11 face off against the world number 7. It’s The Ferret from South Wales that boasts the better head-to-head between these two, winning three of the last five meetings between the pair.

The Dream Maker from Belgium, on the other hand, was a surprise inclusion, especially given the omission of world number 5 Luke Humphries or world number 12 Joe Cullen, both of whom picked up title wins in 2022.

Dimitri lost 6-0 to Michael van Gerwen in their PDC World Championship semi-final last month and himself admitted that he was as surprised as anyone to be included in the Premier League eight. It is Clayton that is favoured to take the win in the first match of the night.

Dutch Revenge For Ally Pally Win

Next up, it’s the match of the night as the world number 1, Michael Smith, takes on Michael van Gerwen, the most successful darter still playing right now. Back at the Alexandra Palace just under a month ago, it was the Bully Boy who came out on top as he finally fulfilled his darting destiny and became world champion, even sinking a history-making nine-darter on the way.

He then followed that up with a Bahrain Masters title by beating Gerwyn Price in the final but looked unconvincing at last week’s Darts Masters where he was dismissed 11-7 by Chris Dobey.

Mighty Mike wasn’t exactly in top form himself and lost out to Rob Cross but, purely because he still knows how to win when playing badly, we are still backing the Dutch darts master to get the job done and get revenge for his PDC World Championship defeat.

Snakebite To See Off Debutant

The night’s third quarter-final sees Peter Wright take on Chris Dobey, the latter of whom will be making his Premier League debut. The pair have only met twice on previous occasions with Snakebite coming out on top both times.

Two-time World Champion Wright is currently ranked second in the world behind Smith, whereas Dobey is the world number 2. Of course, this means nothing on the night and Dobey should be on a real high having joined the ranks of the major winners less than a week ago.

At the Masters, Wright was knocked out by Cross in the semi-final stage but overall, he did impress in the tournament, beating Dave Chisnall and Clayton and his experience should shine through and allow him to make it three wins out of three against Hollywood.

In Belfast, Wright has the darts against newcomer Chris Dobey in the quarter-finals, and would also be throwing first against either Nathan Aspinall or Gerwyn Price, before playing whoever emerges from the top half, possibly Michael van Gerwen, in the final.

Fitter Price To Freeze The Asp

Last up is a match against Nathan Aspinall and Gerwyn Price. The Iceman took to his social media channels to declare himself feeling much better this week than he did seven days ago in Milton Keynes where sickness may or may not have been the reason behind his shock elimination at the hands of the Aubergenius that is Dirk van Duijvenbode in the Round of 16.

And although he didn’t enjoy the best of PDC World Championships either — even coming out to play with ear defenders on– he was looking much sharper at the recent Bahrain Masters last month.

It was here that he reached the final before repeating the feat in Copenhagen. The Asp, on the other hand, has lost three of his last four matches at the Masters, the PDC World Championships and the Players Championship respectively so backing the Welshman to win just makes sense.

MVG To Defend His Crown

As for the outright winner, a lot can change between now and May. Given MVG’s overall consistency, which cannot be said for Peter Wright, Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith, you would have to favour six-time winner and the defending champion Michael van Gerwen.

As an “outsider” I think a case can be made for 2021 Premier League champion Jonny Clayton. Not only is he a former winner, but the Ferret topped the table 12 months ago.

It seems a long time ago, but neither Smith, Wright, Price nor the Iceman has ever once finished in the top four.

Clayton seemed to enjoy the new format last year going on to win four times during the season and at 9/1 with bet365 is definitely worth a punt.
